Effect of Hanna Somatic Education on Low Back and Neck Pain Levels
Qiuju Huang
Presentation:
Qiuju worked in Medical Employee Health Clinic. At work, she noticed that many of her patients had similar experience to hers. These patients suffer from chronic muscle pain, which affects their quality of life and work. The endless pain drove them to visit the doctor regularly and took various painkillers, but this only temporarily and partially relieved the pain. It made them feel helpless. To help these patients, with the support of the hospital's management, Qiuju started her practice at Wellness Teaching Clinic in Employee Health Clinic where she worked since the end of the first semester of HSE training in 2015. There, she used her knowledge of HSE to help medical staff with muscle pain or functional limitations relieve pain and restore muscle function. She had worked with hundreds of patients with both private in her clinic and group classes in the community of Aramco. She was happy to see her patients walk out of the clinic with a satisfied smile after receiving the work of HSE. This valuable practice in a healthcare setting provided a solid foundation for her to complete a retrospective study on the effects of Hanna Somatic Education on patients with chronic neck or back pain. "This is the first study on HSE published in a peer-reviewed academic journal," said Gabriel, president of the AHSE.

Qiuju Huang CHSE
was a senior nurse clinician worked at the Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) in Saudi Arabia for 20 years (the hospital was called Saudi Medical Organization prior to JHAH). She discovered Hanna Somatic Education after a serious injury to her low back caused her disc protrusion. Severe low back pain forced her to stop the sports she loved—jogging and other normal activities; and her work had been limited for a long time. She tried almost everything, and Hanna Somatics helped her much more than anything she tried. After learning Hanna somatic exercises, she was able to resume her jogging freely and work back to normal. She decided to train at the Novato Institute for Somatic Research & Training, becoming a HSE practitioner. Although the decision to embark on studying journey of HSE is closely related to her personal experience, it is not the only reason. Another important reason has to do with her favorite nursing career. She has also taught Tai chi for 17 years to members of the Saudi Aramco employee and dependents’ community. She is now retired from nursing and lives with her family in her hometown of Dalian in northeast China. She will continue to enjoy her Somatic journey in China.

HSE Learning Community
Presenters and Attendees Wanted
The Hanna Somatic Education Learning Community is a monthly group that will be hosted by Ryan Moschell and the AHSE Education Committee. This group’s mission is to cultivate our members’ continued learning and deepen our community’s connection. All AHSE members would be most welcome to attend. Together, we’d benefit Hanna Somatics as a discipline, while supporting the common growth of our clients, the general public, and ourselves as Hanna Somatic Educators.
In this online group, AHSE members are invited to volunteer to teach a topic of their choice focused on Hanna Somatic Education. Each presentation would be 30 to 45 minutes in length. You’d have the valuable opportunity to practice your presentation skills and your HSE colleagues could process your chosen topic together. You certainly don’t need to be an expert on the topic. You’d inspire the group to learn from each other through their questions and discussion.
The presenter can get a recording of their own presentation that they can present to their clients, post on social media, upload to YouTube, or use to write an article. If the content is cleared by the AHSE Education Committee, your recording can be archived in the Members section of the AHSE website.
Suggested presentation topics:
o Anatomy
o Kinesiology
o Neuroscience
o Somatic movements / Techniques
